HIGH SCHOOL PROJECTS

A recent study conducted by the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) found that more than one-third of Ontario high school students gambled for money in the past year.  Three to four percent of teens who gamble experience gambling problems. Additional research indicates that once teens reach the age of 18, the risk of developing a problem doubles. This emphasizes the importance of prevention messages to this age group.

RGC sponsors projects within Ontario’s high school system, including an annual contest. The contest challenges students to use their talents in different mediums to raise awareness about the risks of teen gambling. Students often have an opportunity to see their work incorporated into RGC’s future drama programs.

In recent years, students have submitted scripts, songs, short stories, web page designs, poems and photographs to engage their peers in this important topic.

This year, RGC will hold a Flash Fiction Contest with a 1st place scholarship of $1,000 and 2nd place scholarship of $500.

Deadline for submission is Monday, January 18, 2010.
